History has a curious way of hiding in plain sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it lives in museums, carefully labeled and protected behind glass. Other times, it shows up unexpectedly \u2014 resting on a folding table at a neighborhood yard sale, tucked between outdated kitchenware and forgotten trinkets, waiting for someone to notice it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was exactly the case with the object I found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first glance, it didn\u2019t look particularly remarkable. It wasn\u2019t decorative, ornate, or obviously valuable. Today, washing clothes is one of the easiest household chores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You load a machine.
Add detergent.
Press a button.
Walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In under an hour, your clothes are clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for most of human history, laundry was one of the most physically exhausting and time-consuming tasks a household faced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were no washing machines.
No running water.
No commercial soap as we know it today.<\/p>\n\n\n
