A routine trespassing call turned into an unexpected twist Monday evening when a 20-year-old woman attempted to convince officers she lived in an apartment \u2014 using what police say was a poorly made fake lease<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to authorities, officers were dispatched to a downtown apartment complex after a resident reported someone \u201cjiggling door handles\u201d and trying to enter multiple units. When officers arrived, they found the young woman, identified only as \u201cKayla,\u201d<\/strong> standing confidently in the hallway, insisting she lived in one of the apartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To prove it, Kayla pulled out a printed lease agreement \u2014 but officers immediately noticed something was off. The document had misspelled words<\/strong>, cropped signatures<\/strong>, and a landlord phone number that went straight to a disconnected line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe said, \u2018This is my place, I swear,\u2019\u201d one officer said. \u201cBut the lease looked like it was made on a school laptop during lunch break.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When officers contacted building management, their suspicions were confirmed: Kayla had never lived there<\/strong>, had never applied<\/strong>, and the unit she claimed was hers was currently vacant and undergoing repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Body-camera footage shows Kayla\u2019s confidence begin to crumble as officers pointed out the inconsistencies. She tried to argue that the landlord \u201cmust\u2019ve changed numbers,\u201d then claimed she \u201cdidn\u2019t know why the signatures looked weird.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, she admitted she had found the unit empty, assumed it was unoccupied, and tried to move in without permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kayla was issued a citation for trespassing and released to a family member.<\/p>\n\n\n
